If you’re new to tarot, a 3 card reading is a lovely place to start. It’s simple, doesn’t take long, and you don’t need to know the meaning of every card by heart.
Tarot can be a way to pause, reflect and look at something from a different perspective. So, just keep it simple and have a go.
What is a 3 card tarot reading?
A 3 card tarot reading is a simple tarot spread using three cards, with each card representing a different part of your question or situation.
One of the most common ways to read three cards is:
- Card 1 - What has brought me to this point?
- Card 2 - Present: What is happening for me right now?
- Card 3 - Future: What should I be aware of as I move forward?
But there are lots of other ways to use a 3 card spread, too. You could try:
- Situation – Challenge – Advice
- Let go – Embrace – Explore
- Mind – Body – Spirit
- What I know – What I need to know – What I can do
There really are no strict rules. You can create a spread that suits the question you're asking.
Choose your question
Before you shuffle your cards, take a moment to think about what you'd like some guidance or clarity around.
Open questions tend to work well with tarot. Instead of asking “Will I get the job?”, you could ask “What do I need to know about my career at the moment?”
You don't need to have the perfect question. Just go with what's on your mind.
Shuffle your cards
Find somewhere comfortable and take a few deep breaths. Hold your question in your mind as you shuffle your tarot deck.
There’s no right or wrong way to shuffle. You can cut the deck, spread the cards out and choose one, or simply take the top three.
Go with whatever feels natural to you.
Pull your three cards
Place your three cards in a row and turn them over one at a time.
Before reaching for your guidebook, take a good look at each card.
What do you notice first? Is there a colour, symbol or image that stands out? Does the card remind you of something happening in your life?
The traditional tarot meanings are a great place to start, especially when you're learning, but your own intuition matters too.
Look at the bigger picture
Once you've looked at each card individually, see how they work together.
Are there any repeating themes or symbols? Lots of cards from the same suit? Do the cards seem to tell a story?
Sometimes the message becomes much clearer when you stop looking at each card separately and look at the reading as a whole.
And if it doesn't make sense straight away, that's okay. You don't have to force an answer.
Keep a tarot journal
If you have a notebook, write down your question, the three cards you pulled and anything that stood out to you.
Keeping a tarot journal is a lovely way to get to know your cards. You can look back at your readings later and see how your understanding develops over time.
Remember, there’s no 'wrong' way
When you're learning tarot, it's easy to worry that you're doing it wrong.
But Tarot isn't about memorising 78 cards and finding one perfect meaning for each. The meaning of a card can change depending on the question, its position and the cards around it.
The more you use your deck, the more you'll develop your own relationship with the cards.
Most importantly, have fun with it.
A simple 3 card tarot reading can be a lovely little ritual when you need to slow down, check in with yourself or look at something from a fresh perspective.
